It is listed as made for Peter Stokkebye, the Stokkebye name also now part of STG. and then resurrected after a hiatus by Orlik, which has now become a fully owned subsidiary of the Scandinavian Tobacco Group. Originally made by Cope Brothers of Liverpool, it was bought by Gallaher, then A&C Peterson. Escudo means "shield" in Spanish and Portuguese, and the word was used for a large coin used in times past, a coin of roughly the size of these large medallions.Įscudo has a varied history. That does not mean it is automatically the best, but it is the standard against which others are judged. Similar Blends: Dunhill - De Luxe Navy Rolls.Įscudo Navy De Luxe is the benchmark for Virginia/Perique blends. ![]() And if you are, you can send the rest to me. If you are thinking of trying it, stop thinking and order it. I have a Stanwell 242 dedicated to Escudo that probably gets more than its share of use.Įverything that needs to be said has been said in previous reviews. I like to rub out the coins, and will typically smoke only one at a time in a smaller, wider bowled pipe such as a small pot or prince. Flavorwise, the Perique is mild in this one compared to some other Perique-forward blends, but it's in perfect proportion. I get very little Perique in the tin note. The Virginias are divine - that perfect, fresh hay tin note. Rarely does a day go by when I do not smoke it. ![]() While there are many fantastic VaPers available (and some not-so-fantastic), Escudo is The One. The benchmark by which all others are judged. This is, quite simply, the best VaPer out there. I suppose I'm being nit picky, because this version is worth buying. Can be an all day smoke for the experienced puffer. Has a pleasant, lightly lingering after taste, and the room note is a step stronger. Leaves a little moisture in the bowl, and requires some relights. ![]() Burns cool, clean and a little slow with a mostly consistent, moderately deep flavor. Won't bite or get harsh, but it does sport a few rough edges. The nic-hit is just past the center of mild to medium. The strength and taste levels are medium. All versions have had a complimentary, very mildly applied plum and prune-like toppings. The spicy, raisiny, figgy and plumy perique is very similar to the earlier in a support role. This, as the earlier versions, has light tangy dark fruit, earth and wood as well as the previously mentioned, more obvious aspects The earlier version had better Virginias. The Virginias currently used are, I believe, Stokkebye, which is always grassy, hay-like and less tart and tangy citrus sweet than Va.s from other companies. I might give this new version a 2 and 3/4 rather than a full three stars only because the Peterson version gets a full 3 stars, and maybe even four from me. And though the new DDNR is not as good as the Murray's version, I find it superior to this incarnation of Escudo.ĭespite those criticisms, this has its own merits. The Murray's DDNR was a little sweeter and certainly fuller than any Escudo version I have tried. I agree with some of the comparisons to Dunhill Deluxe Navy Rolls, though the latest version of that is richer, a little sweeter and less grassy than the new Escudo. I prefer the A.C.Peterson version better because it was a bit richer in taste than the current Escudo, not to mention less grassy, and slightly spicier.
